Ten Easy Steps To A Fascist America

Interesting piece by Naomi Wolf in today's Guardian. Whilst I do not wholly agree, I do think that Western democracies are creating an environment in which the fascists would certainly benefit. According to Wolf, the following is necessary:

1 Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy

2 Create a gulag

3 Develop a thug caste

4 Set up an internal surveillance system

5 Harass citizens' groups

6 Engage in arbitrary detention and release

7 Target key individuals

8 Control the press

9 Dissent equals treason

10 Suspend the rule of law

Interesting read though it is, I would argue that all leaders since the end of the Second World War have been steadily steering us down this course (including Wolf's beloved Clinton). We are be prepared for the time when the government handles crowd control, while private corporations prepare to control all aspects of our lives. The apparatus described is merely the means to which the governments and the corporations will achieve their ends. And Wolf, through her support of Clinton, is as much a part of this trend as any other.
