Another Tenuous Link

Over the past few days, I have regularly been visiting Lenin's Tomb and joining in on the ongoing debate regarding the events in Lebanon. I have been particularly concerned about how the US government was intending on using this crisis to their advantage, particularly regarding the ongoing 'War on Terror' and the likely imminent action against Iran. To this effect, I pointed out to Lenin (see comments) that I believed that the US administration was likely to use the devastation in Lebanon to draw a link between Hezbollah and Al Qaida. Of course, this was dismissed as fantasy as the US government would surely not think there was any link between the two, particularly given Nasrallah's dislike of Bin Laden.

Imagine my surprise when today I discover that Fox News has indeed made that very same link. I suppose I should be happy that I predicted that this would happen, but of course I am not. This is another example of the administration's attempts to use fear and the 'War on Terror' to control the population. It was only a matter of time before the voice of the government made some kind of link between the two. The depressing thing is that many people will believe this, much like they did with Hussein and Al Qaida and the government will have achieved exactly what they wanted. A population fearful of a massive inter-weaving network of Islamic terrorist organisations that have set out to destroy the world. It's a powerful tool with which to control populations. And it is a tool that is wielded to great effect. I strongly suggest you read the article on Nasrallah and, indeed, read Lenin's Tomb to find an alternative to the mainstream view.

For further information on previous attempts to link the two, see MediaMatters.
