The US government have continued to undermine the efforts of the international community to call on both parties to observe a ceasefire. Clearly intending to further intensify the fighting in South Lebanon, they have hurried through a shipment of bombs for the Israeli military to rain down on civilians in Lebanon. The US government has once again, unsurprisingly perhaps, displayed a clear disregard for the lives of civilians in the Middle East. How clear must the situation be to stop them from encouraging the Israeli government to bomb Lebanon back into the Middle Ages?? Even members of the UK government are questioning Israeli tactics. Kim Howells spoke to the media upon visiting Beirut and spoke of his disbelief at the
destruction of the infrastructure, the death of so many children and so many people. These have not been surgical strikes.
This is the first time a member of the UK government has spoken out about the military action in Lebanon. It is, as is always the case when it comes to relations with Bush Corp, too little too late. And I am sure Blair will have something to say while he frantically tries to wash the blood from his hands. How many more people must die before decent people across the globe say no? How many more children will suffer while the US pursues it's broader military strategy of bringing 'peace and democracy' to the Middle East? Howells goes on to add:
And it's very very difficult I think to understand the kind of military tactics that have been used. You know, if they're chasing Hezbollah, then go for Hezbollah. You don't go for the entire Lebanese nation.
If only the blood thirsty zealots that run Bush Corp would agree. They have no fear about destroying a sovereign nation if it furthers their goals of establishing American influence throughout the region. Even if the action itself further enrages impressionable Islamic youth. For this is the only thing that will come out of this state sponsored terror. The terrorist organisations must be thanking Bush everyday for the help he is providing them. And Bush in turn must be thanking them. It is providing a very useful diversion to his own incompetence.
No matter how this latest violation international law is ended, the repercussions will be felt for a long time. It will cause a ripple effect throughout the Middle East. It will further confirm Iranian suspicions that they are an imminent threat and lead them to the obvious conclusion. Attempts will be accelerated to secure a nuclear missile to ensure that they have the same protection as North Korea. It is yet another mis-calculation by those in America who have pursued a vision built on the destruction of international law and of their dominance of international institutions. Perhaps it is one mis-calculation too many.
