Jewish Iranian MP Confronts President

Ok, so this story probably won't convince some people that Iran isn't as evil as Bush and Blair would have you believe, however, I thought it was interesting and worth sharing (if only because it won't get much coverage in the right leaning press). According to The Guardian, Iran's only Jewish MP confronted Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about his recent comments about the Holocaust. The MP, Maurice Motamed, said that the president insisted he is no Holocaust denier and that he is no anti-Semite. Of course, perhaps he would say this, but it is an interesting point nonetheless. Mr Motamed goes on to comment that:

"There is no pressure on the synagogues, no problems of desecration. I think the problem in Europe is worse than here. There is a lot of anti-semitism in other countries."

It is also interesting to note that recent legislation has actually enhanced the status of Jews in Iran. For example, recent legislation was introduced to stop the practice of paying Muslim accident victims more than Jewish victims. I certainly find it interesting to learn in a country whose elections are considered to be rigged, that the leaders are anti-Semitic and that they deny the Holocaust, there is a Jewish MP who is free and able to confront the President when he fundamentally disagrees with what is said.

Incidentally, Mr Motamed has also previously commented on the allegation that the Iranian government are introducing a law whereby all Jews have to wear a marker on their clothing. He called it a 'lie'. Did you get that Biased BBC lovers? A Jew, who sits in parliament, in Iran has called the allegation a 'lie'. So how is that going to be spun by the foaming mouth righties I wonder???
