Rendition Flights: Another Nail in the Coffin of Liberty

There have been many reports the past couple of days about European countries collusion with the CIA in so-called ‘rendition’ flights. This practice has been widely reported for some time now (see Amnesty International). The release of a report by the Council of Europe has, however, highlighted the extent to which governments throughout Europe have turned a blind eye to these practices. Despite some on the right declaring this a non-story, the truth is this is another in a long line of human rights abuses throughout the western world.

First there was Guantanamo Bay. Then came Abu Ghraib. Now we have ‘rendition’ flights. The strange thing is that we are supposed to be defending our western liberties against the onslaught of radical Islamicists. So how are we defending our way of life? By dismantling the things that secure our freedoms. Ok, yeah, that works. By turning ourselves into an illiberal state we are giving in piece by piece to the terrorists. They are winning. We are changing our way of life. They are not. How simple can this be? We should not be changing at all. We are crumbling. If we don’t stop the gradual erosion of our liberties, something governments have been desperate to remove for decades, we will end up living in a police state. It is that serious.
