I have posted before on this fashion as charity fad. There has been a growing trend in recent years for people to wear wristbands because it makes them look fashionable (not because they support a particular charitable movement). The latest fad is the new Red label, supported by that irritating twat Bono (even I find him annoying and I agree with most of what he says!). An advertisement in The Guardian for the new Motorola phone has the tagline:
The Red MotoSlvr is designed to help eliminate AIDS in Africa
Wow, that is some special phone how on Earth does it do that?? Does it actually make the drugs necessary to eliminate AIDS?? Does it force the pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices and help people receive treatment??? No, it gives 5% of your spend to The Global Fund. Well, that is really going to eliminate it isn't it? Of course not, it's just gonna make some fashionista feel good because they have a trendy phone that might possibly help someone somewhere. There's nothing as fashionable as looking like you give a shit, is there? Good job the corporations have got a hold of this idea, we wouldn't want them to miss out on any revenue from the 'look at me, I care' brigade. Well, I care but I don't want to advertise the fact by buying into this shallow agenda.
