Media Run Government

One of the most disturbing things that occurred around the time I went away on my holiday was the call for a UK version of Megan's Law. It disturbed me on many levels, not least the fact that our government (who have made a habit of pandering to the right-wing press) is letting The News of the World set their agenda. The News of the World!!!! That's not even funny. I can't see how this law is going to help anyone. There is a massive difference between a man who flashes his penis at a group of kids and a man who sexually assaults a minor. Of course both are wrong, but you surely can't believe the two things are equal?? And yet, with a law similar to the US, the former will be branded a paedophile and suffer at the hands of the mindless thugs who seek retribution. That's not to mention those who will be the victims of a miscarriage of justice (not exactly unknown in this country). And all to please a few foaming at the mouth righties.

My mind is cast back to those protests where parents were carrying placards with the unforgettable slogan 'paedophils out'. Not to mention the very small children forced to carry placards and wear t-shirts covered in slogans (surely child abuse in itself - I don't believe that the children pestered the parents to go and shout at the paedophiles). This is a very dangerous state of affairs indeed. The gutter press have no right and no mandate to go about influencing the laws of the land.
